The River Valley Bridegroom Fast is a "solemn assembly" of believers, mourning and crying out to God in prayer. We observe this fast as a part of our congregation's calling to bring redemption to the 30 communities of the East St. Louis river valley.
We observe this fast because we know the state of the world and specifically the River Valley is not okay, because Jesus is not here reigning in fullness. This fast shakes us from our complacency and reminds us of our personal and regional need for Jesus. In our fasting, we desire that our united cry would be heard by God, saying, "Jesus, we want you to come back! Things are not okay without you here! Come make things right. Come have your way! Show us how to play our part well!"
- This fast is observed each month, on the Monday-through-Wednesday after the first Worship Sunday of each month. The fast in December is for 7 days, adding up to a total of 40 days per year.
- We know many Christians are new to fasting. When people first join us in this corporate fast, we invite them to only fast food one day their first month, and only two days their second month.
- Each person may choose his or her own form of fasting.
- Please read our information about fasting, and also these recommended Guidelines for Fasting for safety information, before participating in any fast.
And Jesus said to them, "Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them?" The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away and then they will fast."
